Rio Program Opens Free Film Workshop Slots for Favela Youth

Overview

• The Circuito Cine Curta opened registration for 25 free places that prioritize residents of Rocinha and Vidigal and accept applicants ages 16 and up.
• Sign-ups are in person at the Centro Paroquial Dom Helder Câmara in Leblon, where the classes will take place.
• Students will learn every stage of filmmaking and will finish the course by creating a collective short film that screens for the public.
• The workshop was created by Juliana Teixeira and will be taught by professor Isabel Veiga, with support from Brazil’s Ministry of Culture and the Rio city government.
• In the North Zone, the grassroots Cinema di Cria has run free street-based classes across three communities for about three years, serving roughly 45 youths, producing two music videos and the documentary Meninos da Favela, and seeking NGO status to grow after one alumnus entered the field professionally.
