Rio Orders Delivery Apps to Police Risky Riding, Opens First Support Hub for Couriers

City officials set a short deadline for delivery apps to join the safety program under threat of strict oversight.

  • Drivers are evaluated on a rolling 30‑day basis and must keep at least 60% of trips free of risky conduct, with a mandatory course and 5‑, 10‑ and 30‑day restrictions leading up to possible permanent delisting for repeat offenses.
  • Platforms must send monthly reports to CET‑Rio detailing notifications, rewards, course attendance, and removals, with the agency tasked to monitor results and propose improvements.
  • Only 99 has joined so far, the city set a compliance window of up to 45 days and warned of rigorous inspections, and the first of 12 staffed rest stops opened in Botafogo with more planned for Maracanã, Barra da Tijuca, Bangu, Sampaio, Madureira, Recreio, São Cristóvão, Campo Grande, Laranjeiras, Engenho de Dentro, and another point in Botafogo.
