Rio Details New Year’s Security Plan and Overhauled Fireworks for Beach Revelers

Officials detail expanded surveillance with timed metro access to keep millions moving safely.

Overview

  • An integrated state operation will deploy more than 28,700 security agents, with about 300 vehicles equipped with facial-recognition and license-plate readers and focused monitoring of roughly 9,900 people wearing electronic ankle bracelets.
  • In Copacabana, the plan assigns 3,500 police, 182 vehicles and 17 screening points using metal detectors and facial-recognition cameras, supported by observation towers, drones with live transmission and specialized crowd-control teams.
  • The Copacabana spectacle adds a 12-minute pyrotechnic show from 19 barges and an estimated 1,200-drone display under cenographer Christophe Berthonneau, aiming to avoid the smoke problems reported last year.
  • MetrôRio will run a special service from 7 p.m. on Dec. 31 to 5 a.m. on Jan. 1 requiring a R$15 Réveillon 2026 passport with a QR code for entry and a return wristband to manage boarding times.
  • Niterói projects around 400,000 attendees in Icaraí with shows by Nando Reis, Viradouro and Ludmilla, enforcing traffic closures and a security plan with 477 military police, 413 municipal agents, drones, quadricycles and 15 observation points.
