Rio Could Be Brazil's Hottest Capital This Weekend as Temperatures Top 40°C

Heat warnings expand to the capital on Monday with Guapimirim forecast to reach the extreme tier Tuesday.

  • State health intelligence issued excess-heat alerts starting Sunday, placing multiple municipalities at Laranja (Severe) using the EHF index, including Belford Roxo, Japeri, São Gonçalo, Seropédica, Nova Iguaçu, Guapimirim, Itaguaí, Maricá, Piraí and Queimados.
  • The city of Rio entered level 2 of its five-tier municipal heat protocol at 9:45 a.m. Friday after temperatures neared 38°C.
  • Forecasts call for readings above 39°C on Saturday and above 40°C on Sunday statewide, while Alerta Rio projects 38°C Saturday and 39°C Sunday with no rain.
  • SES-RJ installed external hydration points at 27 state UPAs, SAMU reinforced coverage with motolances and rapid-intervention vehicles, and health units activated risk protocols with rehydration salts for vulnerable patients.
  • Cedae will distribute 10,000 liters of chilled water Saturday along Copacabana and Aterro do Flamengo, with more than 5,000 liters planned Monday at major train stations and other high-traffic points in the metro area.
