Rio Assembly Committee Backs Revoking Arrest of Speaker Rodrigo Bacellar

The Supreme Federal Court alone can authorize his release regardless of the assembly's vote.

Overview

  • By a 4–2 vote, Alerj’s Constitution and Justice Committee approved a resolution recommending that Bacellar’s detention be revoked.
  • The report now goes to an extraordinary plenary session of the 69-member assembly, where at least 36 votes are required to advance the position.
  • Minister Alexandre de Moraes of the Supreme Federal Court ordered Bacellar’s arrest in the ADPF das Favelas case after Federal Police alleged he guided an investigated deputy to remove items from his home.
  • The underlying probe centers on Thiego Raimundo dos Santos Silva, known as TH Joias, who was arrested on charges including drug trafficking, corruption, and money laundering, with suspicion of arms negotiations for the Comando Vermelho.
  • Committee rapporteur Rodrigo Amorim said the assembly’s resolution will be published and sent to the Supreme Court for consideration, and he emphasized that only the original judge can lift the detention.
