Ringleader Pleads Guilty in $245M Bitcoin Theft

The plea shows prosecutors using the RICO statute to target organizers and to expand efforts to trace and seize stolen cryptocurrency.

Overview

  • Malone Lam pleaded guilty on Sept. 8, 2026, to one count of participating in a RICO conspiracy tied to the theft of more than 4,100 Bitcoin from a Washington, D.C., resident.
  • Prosecutors say the group operated from at least October 2023 through May 2025 and used social engineering, impersonation of companies like Google and Gemini, remote-access tools and occasional residential break‑ins to gain access to victims’ accounts.
  • Investigators traced parts of the stolen proceeds into conspicuous luxury spending such as exotic cars, private jets, rental mansions and large nightclub bills, which provided leads for asset tracing and partial recoveries.
  • Lam, a 22‑year‑old Singapore citizen and Miami resident arrested in September 2025, faces up to 20 years in prison; a status hearing in his case is set for Dec. 8, 2026, and he is one of 18 people charged in the wider indictment.
  • The Justice Department’s use of RICO in a major Bitcoin‑theft case broadens prosecutors’ tools to pursue organizers, seek wider forfeiture and press for restitution while related prosecutions and asset‑recovery efforts continue.
