RIMS Imphal Shuts Services After Mob Attack as Manipur Doctors Announce 24-Hour Strike

The shutdown follows two patient deaths that prompted negligence allegations against a senior gynaecologist.

Overview

  • Police said a crowd stormed the RIMS campus on September 21, vandalised property and assaulted Dr Ch Pritamkumar Singh, who was rescued and is now stable in the Trauma ICU.
  • Relatives blamed medical negligence for the deaths of 35-year-old Chingshubam Ongbi Manju during a caesarean and 50-year-old Yambem Sanjoy soon after discharge, triggering the unrest.
  • TAMOA, backed by RDA and other RIMS bodies, has halted OPD, emergency care, routine surgeries and post-mortems indefinitely until arrests are made and workplace safety is guaranteed.
  • The Indian Medical Association’s Manipur branch will suspend routine services statewide from 6 a.m. September 23 to 6 a.m. September 24 across government and private facilities, including diagnostic centres.
  • Additional police have been deployed and investigations are underway, with RIMS maintaining care for admitted patients as the shutdown strains access at Manipur’s lone Union-run medical institute.
