Riley Gaines Appointed to Sumner County Library Board as Commission Keeps Nine Seats

The decision keeps the panel at nine seats, replaces former chair Joanna Daniels with Riley Gaines, and positions conservatives to revisit book-removal policies on Nov. 12.

Overview

  • County commissioners voted on Oct. 21 to maintain a nine-member library board and approved Gaines to fill one of two vacancies, a move she confirmed on X.
  • Joanna Daniels was not reappointed at the end of her term, and she said Gaines will carry forward her push to remove transgender-themed and sexually explicit materials from children’s sections.
  • Business owner Steve Wasilowski will also join the board, which is scheduled to meet next on Nov. 12, when contested collection policies could return for consideration.
  • Earlier efforts to enact a removal policy were tabled in May and rejected in August, and a planned vote last week failed for lack of a quorum.
  • The appointment drew divided responses, with six commissioners voting no and some local officials publicly criticizing the choice while others praised it.
