Rijkswaterstaat Warns of 500 km of Jams as A9 Shuts for Weekend and Roadworks Intensify

Officials warn of severe delays with the autumn break starting alongside major highway works.

Overview

  • From 20:00 Friday to 05:00 Monday, the A9 is closed in both directions between Holendrecht and Badhoevedorp as Veenix shifts traffic near Ouderkerk; more weekend closures follow later in October, November and December.
  • Regional maintenance adds to disruption, including a two‑week closure on the N210 and weekend closures on the N11 and N446, plus multiple works in the Rijnmond area on the A16, A13, A15 and the Botlektunnel.
  • Rijkswaterstaat forecasts a very heavy Friday evening rush, with up to 500 kilometres of congestion as holiday travel combines with lane closures and detours.
  • An explosive device detonated around 01:15 at a home on Hendrik Werkmanstraat in Almere, blowing out a window and damaging the door; no one was inside and police are investigating.
  • In Amsterdam’s Slotermeer flat fire, police corrected earlier remarks on the cause, saying it remains unclear pending medical forensics; 17 apartments are still uninhabitable and the criminal inquiry is closed.
