Rijksmuseum Unveils €60 Million Sculpture Garden Plan for 2026 Opening

Funded by the Don Quixote Foundation, the project now moves through Amsterdam’s planning approvals.

Overview

  • The garden will merge Carel Willinkplantsoen with three previously closed Amsterdam School pavilions across the Boerenwetering from the museum.
  • Foster + Partners will restore the listed pavilions as exhibition spaces, with the landscape designed by Belgian architect Piet Blanckaert.
  • The donation underwrites construction and a substantial long-term loan of sculptures, with planned displays of works by Giacometti, Bourgeois, Calder, Arp, Horn and Moore.
  • Free daytime entry is planned, and ecological measures include planting 22 mature trees and expanding native species to support urban biodiversity.
  • Planning permission is pending, the city expects more documents this month, and the opening timeline depends on the approvals process.
