Right Carriageway of Mérida’s A-5/A-66 Guadiana Bridge Closed for Safety Works

Traffic shifts to the opposite carriageway's inner lane under temporary signage.

Overview

  • The closure began at midnight on September 9 between km 341.6 and 343.2 to replace the bridge’s expansion joints.
  • Traffic toward Badajoz and Seville is slated to remain shut through October 3, with the timeline subject to reduction if progress permits.
  • Once this phase ends, the left carriageway toward Madrid and Cáceres is scheduled to close from October 6 to October 30 over the same span.
  • The viaduct carries both the A-5 and A-66 and functions as Mérida’s bypass, producing queues as works resume on the region’s busiest road.
  • The project has a current budget of €1.415 billion and is structured in two phases following preparatory lane adjustments carried out in May.
