Rick Davies, Supertramp Co-Founder and Keyboardist, Dies at 81

He died at home on Long Island following a decade-long fight with multiple myeloma.

Overview

  • The Supertramp Partnership said Davies died on Sept. 5 at his Long Island residence after a long illness.
  • A founding singer and keyboardist, he was the band’s only constant member and wrote or sang key tracks including “Bloody Well Right” and “Goodbye Stranger.”
  • Diagnosed with multiple myeloma in 2015, he canceled a planned reunion tour that year and later performed occasionally as Ricky and the Rockets.
  • After Roger Hodgson’s 1983 departure, Davies continued to lead Supertramp through albums released up to 2002 and tours spanning decades.
  • Long-running royalty disputes resurfaced this year, with a U.S. judge last month ordering Hodgson to allocate songwriting royalties to three former bandmates; Davies is survived by his wife and manager, Sue.
