Richard Shaw Charged With Attempted Murder in Bronx Subway Stabbing

Police say surveillance images prompted a shelter worker to identify the suspect, leading to his arrest.

Overview

  • NYPD arrested Shaw, 32, on Wednesday in the 49th Precinct on counts including attempted murder, attempted robbery with a deadly weapon, assault and related offenses, and he was awaiting arraignment.
  • Investigators say he stabbed an 18-year-old multiple times on the northbound No. 2 platform at the Prospect Avenue station around 6:17 p.m. on Jan. 19.
  • He then allegedly punched and kicked a 19-year-old who was calling 911 while trying to steal his phone, and that victim refused medical attention at the scene.
  • The injured teenager was taken to St. Barnabas Hospital in stable condition, and police say the victims did not know the attacker.
  • The incident was one of several subway slashings reported that day across the city, with police still seeking suspects in the Queens and Brooklyn cases, and records show Shaw had a prior April 25 assault arrest in Prospect Park.
