Overview

  • On June 20, Hartford Superior Court handed down a 30-year prison sentence for Barrington, suspending 14 years after he serves 16 and adding five years of probation.
  • Barrington pleaded guilty in April to manslaughter, first-degree assault and interfering with an officer in connection with the September 2023 crash.
  • The crash occurred on Asylum Avenue when Barrington, fleeing a traffic stop, collided with Detective Bobby Garten’s cruiser, killing the second-generation officer and injuring his partner, Officer Brian Kearney.
  • Barrington told police he fled because his unregistered car contained marijuana and he feared consequences after smoking the drug about an hour before the collision.
  • The Garten family had urged the maximum 41-year sentence to represent the 41 years they said their brother lost and voiced disappointment over the judge’s decision to suspend a portion of the term.
