Rice University Names Scott Abell as New Head Football Coach

Abell, who led Davidson to consistent success, takes over following the dismissal of Mike Bloomgren.

Scott Abell, previously head coach at Davidson College, has been hired as Rice University's 20th head football coach.
Abell compiled a 47-28 record over seven seasons at Davidson, leading the team to three FCS playoff appearances and two Pioneer League championships.
Rice's athletic director, Tommy McClelland, praised Abell's ability to build winning programs and develop players both on and off the field.
Abell has a track record of success at academic institutions, including a 39-24 record during his tenure at Washington & Lee University.
He replaces Mike Bloomgren, who was dismissed after posting a 24-52 record across six seasons with the Owls.
