Overview
- The Diputación de Pontevedra’s Sala Maruja Mallo in Vigo is hosting the traveling exhibition “Ricardo Portela, inmorrente,” which runs through October 23, 2026.
- The show displays Portela’s gaitas, clothing, photographs, recordings, discography and personal documents to trace his career and musical practice.
- Organizers are the Diputación de Pontevedra and the Asociación Cultural Pai da Cana and the exhibition is curated by gaita player Óscar Ibáñez; local officials used the opening to call Portela a “maestro de maestros.”
- Portela (Viascón, 1920–1992) moved to Vigo at age 12, studied with Xosé Oliveira Blanco (‘Pepe o Moreno’), and received civic recognition when the Concello named a street for him in 1992.
- By gathering artifacts and recordings the exhibition aims to preserve regional musical memory, show how Portela shaped later players such as Carlos Núñez and Xosé Manuel Budiño, and circulate his legacy across Pontevedra and Viascón.
