R.I. Man Arrested, Held Without Bail in Salem Hit-and-Run That Injured Officer

The suspect was ordered detained pending a court appearance Monday after pleading not guilty at his arraignment.

  • Lucas David Fulcar-Bautista, 33, of Coventry, R.I., was arrested in Lawrence following a Salem-led investigation assisted by state, federal, and local agencies.
  • He pleaded not guilty in Salem District Court to trafficking more than 10 grams of fentanyl, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, assault by means of a dangerous weapon, negligent operation, leaving the scene of a personal injury crash, failure to stop for police, speeding, and disorderly conduct.
  • Police say the Jan. 15 incident occurred during a narcotics investigation near 12 Pope Street when a vehicle drove onto the sidewalk, struck an officer, and narrowly missed a second officer.
  • The injured officer was treated for minor injuries, released the next day, and is expected to make a full recovery, and police describe the case as an isolated event with no ongoing threat.
  • Investigators located the involved car hours after the crash as it was being towed on Jackson Street and reported its license plates had been switched.
