Hackers, identified as the Brain Cipher ransomware group, likely accessed sensitive data, including Social Security numbers, addresses, dates of birth, and banking information.
The breach impacts individuals who have applied for or received benefits such as Medicaid, SNAP, and health insurance since 2016, with hundreds of thousands potentially affected.
Rhode Island and Deloitte have set up a multilingual call center to assist residents, and affected individuals will receive free credit monitoring services once identified.
Class-action lawsuits have been filed against Deloitte, accusing the company of negligence and failure to secure personal data, while state officials investigate further legal actions.
