Rhode Island Couple Killed in TBM-700 Crash on Massachusetts I-195 During Nor’easter

Investigators have zeroed in on storm conditions plus the lack of a filed flight plan after departure from New Bedford.

Overview

  • Officials identified the victims as Thomas Perkins, 68, and Agatha Perkins, 66, of Middletown, Rhode Island, who were pronounced dead at the scene.
  • The single-engine Socata TBM-700 crashed into the grassy median near Exit 19 around 8:15 a.m., igniting a fire and scattering debris across the highway.
  • A motorist was injured when part of the aircraft impacted her car and was taken to St. Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford with injuries not considered life-threatening.
  • The NTSB is leading the investigation; authorities say no flight plan appeared to be filed, and the aircraft had departed from New Bedford Regional Airport.
  • Heavy rain and winds of 30–40 mph from a nor’easter were reported in the area; most lanes on I-195 later reopened, with an eastbound left-lane closure remaining as scene work continued.
