Rhode Island Cold Case Unit Identifies Killers in 1984, 2007 Murders and Closes Both Cases

Investigators used witness reinterviews, forensic document analysis, a familial Y‑STR DNA link to reach charging-level conclusions despite the suspects’ deaths.

Overview

  • Attorney General Peter F. Neronha announced on Oct. 29 that the state’s Cold Case Unit has solved the killings of Debra Stone (1984) and Cynthia McKenna (2007).
  • Detectives concluded Robert D. Geremia killed Stone and Robert J. Corry Jr. killed McKenna, with both men deceased since 1995 and 2014 respectively, precluding criminal charges.
  • In McKenna’s case, a forensic document examiner authenticated Corry’s intercepted confession letters and a Y‑STR DNA profile from a male relative matched DNA on the envelope that carried the confession.
  • In Stone’s case, reinterviewed witnesses—including an informant who described seeing her in Geremia’s apartment and helping move her body—gave accounts consistent with original evidence, which the unit says would have supported charges.
  • Medical examiners found McKenna died of asphyxia due to airway obstruction and Stone died by strangulation, and officials have now closed both files as solved in coordination with North Providence and Narragansett police.
