Rhineland-Palatinate Sees Wind Uptick as Regulator Moves to Open Power Market to Home Batteries

Officials attribute the expansion to shorter permitting times.

Overview

  • Rhineland-Palatinate approved 103 wind turbines last year, seven more than the year before, with 70 further approvals recorded through early September.
  • Newly installed wind capacity increased from roughly 128 megawatts to over 165 megawatts, and net additions this year total about 122 megawatts, according to the state ministry.
  • Household photovoltaic batteries in the state rose from 68,151 to 102,249, reaching 121,410 by July, while the national stock stands at roughly two million units with about 20 gigawatt-hours of capacity.
  • Green Party leaders say faster approvals drove the wind gains and call for greater focus on large-scale storage and the storage potential of electric vehicles.
  • A Federal Network Agency draft (MiSpeL) would allow private batteries and bidirectional EVs to buy low and sell high on the power market, with consultation running until year-end before any decision.
