Rhineland-Palatinate Reports 2024 Drop in Total Convictions, Surge in Sexual- and Hate-Crime Verdicts

Philipp Fernis attributed the spikes to stronger prosecution pressure.

Overview

  • Courts convicted 29,073 people in 2024 in Rhineland-Palatinate, down 3.5% from 2023.
  • Convictions for crimes against sexual self-determination rose to 626, an increase of 94 from the prior year; Fernis noted substantial underreporting in this area.
  • Incitement to hatred convictions jumped 193% to 126 cases.
  • Convictions for distributing propaganda or using symbols of unconstitutional organizations rose about 66% to 126, the highest level in the past decade, with investigations roughly unchanged, which Fernis said reflects increased prosecutorial pressure.
  • Judges imposed 448 youth prison sentences, 27 fewer than in 2023.
