Rhine Drops to New Record Lows, Kaub Bottleneck Splits Navigation

Very low water is forcing steep load limits on barges and short-term truck exemptions as authorities wait to see if forecast rain will briefly ease the crisis.

Overview

  • Citing measurements taken over the weekend and on Monday, multiple Rhine gauges in North Rhine-Westphalia recorded new historic lows, including about 40 centimetres in Cologne and negative readings at Düsseldorf while the Kaub gauge fell to around or below zero.
  • The Kaub bottleneck on the Mittelrhein is effectively splitting the river so that only a few specialist vessels can pass with sharply reduced loads, sharply cutting freight capacity on key upstream‑downstream routes.
  • Low levels have produced immediate operational harms: a freighter remains stuck in a Düsseldorf harbour basin because water is too shallow to refloat it, and wartime ordnance exposed by the low water required a controlled detonation near Hersel.
  • Local operators face acute losses as several ferries suspend service and at least one family-run Rhine ferry has applied for Kurzarbeit, and states plus the federal transport minister have extended or are considering more temporary Sunday and holiday truck exemptions to keep goods moving.
  • Hydrological agencies say no sustained improvement is yet visible and that only forecast rain in early October could deliver temporary relief, while industries that rely on bulk river transport such as chemicals, refineries and steel worry about costly and limited road or rail alternatives.
