Rheinland-Pfalz Spends Least on Culture Among German States, Interest Also Lagging

A new report highlights low cultural spending and participation in Rheinland-Pfalz, with Berlin leading in both areas.

  • Rheinland-Pfalz allocated just €72 per resident to culture in 2020, the lowest among Germany's federal states, compared to Berlin's €250 per resident.
  • Cultural participation in Rheinland-Pfalz is also low, with only 0.4 museum visits per resident in 2021 and 26 theater visits per 1,000 residents in the 2020/21 season.
  • Berlin leads in cultural engagement, with 1.4 museum visits per resident and 79 theater visits per 1,000 residents during the same periods.
  • Publicly funded orchestra concerts in Rheinland-Pfalz saw attendance of just 6 people per 1,000 residents, far below Berlin's 59 per 1,000.
  • The report, based on data from various years, shows that cultural interest and funding are particularly low in Rheinland-Pfalz and Saarland compared to other states.
