Rheinland-Pfalz signs contract to protect Sinti and Roma rights and heritage

Overview

  • On May 28, 2025, Ministerpräsident Alexander Schweitzer and Landesverband Deutscher Sinti und Roma chair Christian Kling formalized the agreement in Mainz to recognize and promote Sinti and Roma culture and history.
  • The deal commits the state to combat Antiziganismus and guarantee equal participation for an estimated 8,000 to 10,000 Sinti and Roma residents in Rheinland-Pfalz.
  • Provisions include support for Romanes language preservation, cultural programming, and historical research to strengthen community heritage.
  • Once the Landtag ratifies the agreement, Rheinland-Pfalz will appoint a binding, independent commissioner to monitor and address discrimination against Sinti and Roma.
  • This contract builds on a series of state agreements since 2019 with religious and cultural groups, following pacts with Alevi, Islamic, and Jewish communities.
