Handout picture released on July 16, 2025 by the Public Defense Department of the State Police Commissioner in Iceland shows lava and smoke erupting from a volcano near Grindavik on the Icelandic peninsula of Reykjanes. A volcano erupted on Wednesday in Iceland's Reykjanes peninsula in the southwest, weather authorities said, the ninth eruption to hit the region since the end of 2023. Broadcaster RUV reported that the nearby fishing village Grindavik had been evacuated, as had the Blue Lagoon, Iceland's famed tourist spot.
Iceland Volcano Eruption

Overview

  • The eruptive crack at Sundhnúkur has lengthened to about 2.4 km and advanced farther north than during any previous event since late 2023
  • Satellite imagery shows lava covering roughly 3.2 sq km as flows slow and remain directed southeast away from critical infrastructure
  • High concentrations of sulphur dioxide are drifting toward Keflavík Airport, prompting advisories for residents in Reykjanesbær and Vogar to stay indoors
  • Evacuation of Grindavík and the Blue Lagoon spa was completed smoothly without reported injuries or damage
  • Seismic tremors have subsided since the initial outbreak with officials warning that this cycle of fissure eruptions may persist for years
