Rewe to Close Frankfurt Glockenbrot Bakery, Threatening 480 Jobs

The closure is part of Rewe’s exit from bread production, with plans to sell a second bakery to Harry-Brot pending regulatory approval.

Rewe Group announced the closure of its Glockenbrot bakery in Frankfurt am Main within the next three to five years, citing capacity and facility limitations.
The decision puts 480 jobs at the Frankfurt location at risk, with negotiations on employee support measures to begin soon.
Rewe plans to sell its second Glockenbrot bakery in Bergkirchen, Bavaria, to Harry-Brot by the end of 2025, contingent on approval from antitrust authorities.
Harry-Brot, a leading bread supplier in Germany, intends to retain all 320 employees at the Bergkirchen site if the sale proceeds.
Harry-Brot also aims to purchase a Rewe property in Erlensee, near Frankfurt, to build a new large-scale bakery, pending regulatory clearance.
