Reward Rises to $4,250 in North Texas Bison Beheading Case

Investigators say rain wiped out key evidence and they suspect more than one person carried off the animal’s head.

Overview

  • The Cooke County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the unlawful killing and beheading of a bison on private land near County Road 301 and FM 3108 south of Lindsay between Nov. 23 and Nov. 26.
  • The combined reward now totals $4,250 for information leading to an identification and arrest, offered by the owners and bison-industry groups including the Texas Bison Association and Liberty Highlands Cattle Company.
  • Sheriff Ray Sappington reports no surveillance video and no arrests to date, with deputies continuing to follow leads.
  • Authorities believe multiple people were involved because a bison head can weigh 150 to 200 pounds, making it difficult for a single person to remove and transport.
  • The owners, Shawn and Christy Neu, reported finding their bison, known as Louisiana, shot and headless, and officials say recent rain likely washed away blood, drag marks and hair at the scene.
