Revocation Reform Lacks a Date as Lawmakers Weigh December or February Debate

Attention shifts to the February session, with a June 2026 cutoff approaching.

Overview

  • Ricardo Monreal said the Chamber could devote the February ordinary session exclusively to the electoral reform package that includes revocation, pending the Presidential Commission’s initiative.
  • He noted the discussion might restart in December but could slip to February because the current period is expected to end on December 11–12.
  • Monreal reiterated that any changes must be approved at least three months before the electoral process that begins on September 1, 2026, effectively setting a June 2026 deadline.
  • A proposal from Deputy Alfonso Ramírez Cuéllar would schedule the revocation consultation for the same day as the 2027 ordinary elections, the first Sunday in June, to streamline logistics and costs.
  • Monreal said a 1 billion peso adjustment to the INE budget does not endanger preparations, with election and revocation funding to be covered in the 2026 fiscal year.
