Overview

  • Under construction near Polo Ground, the overbridge’s Z-shaped layout incorporates two sharp 90-degree turns that truck drivers and industrial representatives warn could become accident hotspots.
  • On July 9, MP Shankar Lalwani wrote to PWD Minister Rakesh Singh requesting a reduction in the sharp turns to prevent traffic jams and safety risks.
  • PWD Minister Rakesh Singh asserts the 1,027.6 metre-long, 12 metre-wide bridge includes five curves built to Indian Road Congress standards with approximately 20 metre turning radii.
  • Executive Engineer Gurmeet Kaur Bhatia confirms the design is being re-examined and that improvements will be made if the review identifies any shortcomings.
  • The review echoes June’s Bhopal Aishbagh ROB incident, which led to the suspension of seven engineers over a 90-degree turn design flaw.
