Overview

  • X withheld Reuters’s primary @Reuters handle in India on July 5, displaying a notice that it was “withheld in IN in response to a legal demand.”
  • Officials from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology stated they had not issued any new order and requested X to explain the account suspension.
  • An anonymous government source said the block stemmed from a May 7 order under Operation Sindoor that X only enforced belatedly.
  • X policy allows accounts to be blocked in specific regions when compelled by valid legal demands, including court orders or reports of local law violations.
  • Following formal engagement by New Delhi, X restored access to the @Reuters account by the evening of July 6.
