Retailers Open on July 4 With Staggered Hours as Federal Services Shut Down

Reduced store hours in many grocery and big-box chains coincide with a full-day shutdown of banks, post offices and federal services

Overview

  • Nearly all major grocery and big-box retailers, such as Walmart, Target and Kroger stores, will operate on July 4 with regular or reduced hours.
  • Aldi will close at 4 p.m., Trader Joe’s at 5 p.m. and Whole Foods at 6 p.m. on Independence Day.
  • Sam’s Club will welcome Plus members at 8 a.m. and standard members at 10 a.m. before closing at 6 p.m. for all shoppers.
  • Costco will observe the holiday by closing all locations, making it one of the few national chains fully shuttered on July 4.
  • U.S. Post Offices and banks will suspend operations for the day, and major carriers such as UPS and FedEx will have limited or no services.
