Retail-Theft Sting in Modesto Nabs Suspect in Salinas Double Homicide

Police released body-camera video showing a state-funded retail theft unit working with Target loss prevention to capture a Salinas double-homicide suspect.

Overview

  • On Sept. 26, Target loss-prevention at 3900 Sisk Road alerted Modesto officers to two suspected shoplifters seen concealing merchandise and leaving without paying.
  • Police detained Angel Cabrera, 18, and Christian DiazSilva, 19, both of Salinas, as they entered a vehicle in the store’s parking lot.
  • Detectives later learned Cabrera was wanted in the Sept. 19 Cross Avenue shooting in Salinas on homicide, attempted homicide and gang-enhancement charges, and he was transferred to Monterey County Jail.
  • Salinas police identified Cabrera as the suspected getaway driver and said 18-year-old Marwuy Camacho was arrested as the alleged shooter, with bail for both set at $14,230,000.
  • DiazSilva was booked into the Stanislaus County Public Safety Center on burglary charges, and Modesto authorities credited their state-funded retail-theft program and retail partnerships for the arrest and a 22% drop in property crime this year.
