Retail Closures Sweep Argentina as Commerce Workers Mark Shifted Holiday

The sector moved the observance to Monday to guarantee a long weekend for commerce workers.

Overview

  • FAECYS and employer chambers transferred the Día del Empleado de Comercio from Friday 26 to Monday 29 September, creating a paid rest day across the sector.
  • Most supermarkets, shopping centers and large stores did not open nationwide, with reports listing major chains such as Carrefour, Coto, Jumbo, Disco, Vea, Walmart, Changomas and La Anónima among those closed.
  • Banks operated normally because banking staff fall under a different collective agreement and are represented by another union.
  • Employees who work today must receive double pay under labor law, and shops may open if attended by owners or by staff who volunteer to work.
  • Local snapshots showed high adherence: Mar del Plata’s union reported about 90% compliance, Santa Fe’s streets were quieter with many shutters down, and some mall services like cinemas, food courts and a clinic remained open.
