Researchers Describe Three New Frog Species, Warn of Deforestation Threat

Researchers aim to leverage the formal descriptions to spur measures that curb agricultural burning in the Huancabamba cloud forests.

Overview

  • A team from the Peruvian Institute of Herpetology led by German Chavez officially described three new Pristimantis species on July 4, 2025.
  • The newly named frogs—Pristimantis chinguelas, P. nunezcortezi and P. yonke—were found at elevations of 2,000 to 3,000 meters in northern Peru’s Huancabamba range.
  • Each frog measures about five centimeters long, features large yellow eyes, cream-and-brown coloration and emits a high-pitched call.
  • Researchers note the species’ low reliance on water bodies signals a healthy cloud-forest ecosystem.
  • The Huancabamba mountains form a key biodiversity corridor between the Amazon and Pacific coasts but face ongoing threats from agricultural fires and deforestation.
