Pakistani authorities, honoring Dahlmeier’s written request, left her remains on Laila Peak when persistent rockfall made recovery too dangerous.

Overview

  • A rockfall struck Dahlmeier at around 5,700 meters on July 28, instantly causing fatal injuries during her alpine‐style ascent of Laila Peak.
  • Helicopter overflights and experienced ground teams repeatedly retreated because of ongoing rockslides and extreme weather conditions.
  • Dahlmeier had explicitly requested in writing that no one risk their lives to recover her body, a wish upheld by her family and rescuers.
  • This summer’s unprecedented heat and dryness in the Karakoram region have intensified rockfall and avalanche hazards for climbers.
  • After retiring from biathlon in 2019, Dahlmeier became a certified mountain and ski guide, summiting Great Trango Tower on July 8 and setting a speed record on Ama Dablam in 2023.
