Rescuers Search for Missing Man After Catete Building Collapse

Overview

• Sixteen people were removed from the debris, with at least 13 sustaining minor injuries and three taken to hospital, including an elderly woman rescued around 7:00 a.m.
• The collapse occurred at about 4:30 a.m. at the corner of Rua Bento Lisboa and Rua Tavares Bastos in Catete, in Rio de Janeiro’s South Zone.
• Roughly 50 firefighters, including GOESP specialists and the canine unit GBRESC, are using drones with thermal cameras and search dogs to locate victims.
• Teams continue to search for a person described as a man of about 20 years old who is believed to be under the rubble.
• The city’s operations center says Defesa Civil and CET‑Rio are on site, and Rua Tavares Bastos remains closed near Bento Lisboa.
