Rescued Walrus Calf in Alaska Receives Intensive Care
A young Pacific walrus, found abandoned and malnourished, is being nursed back to health by the Alaska SeaLife Center.
- The calf, weighing 165 pounds, was discovered alone on a beach in Utqiagvik, Alaska.
- She was dehydrated, malnourished, and had superficial wounds upon rescue.
- Staff at the Alaska SeaLife Center are providing round-the-clock care, acting as surrogate mothers.
- Due to her reliance on human care, the calf will not be released back into the wild.
- This is only the 11th walrus the center has treated since its founding in 1998.
