Rescued Spaniel PD Louie Wins Rising Star Award for Phone Find in A1(M) Fatal Crash Case

The Thin Blue Paw Foundation recognized PC Dan Cuthbertson and his digital-detection dog for uncovering evidence that proved dangerous driving and led to a long prison term.

Overview

  • PD Louie, Durham Constabulary’s first digital-detection dog licensed in December 2023, located a discarded mobile phone during a post-crash search on the A1(M).
  • The team scanned roughly 150 metres of carriageway, verges and nearby fields strewn with debris before Louie indicated the device hidden in undergrowth.
  • Forensic analysis of the phone showed calls and texts throughout the journey and a photo taken less than half a second before impact showing 141mph with the victims’ car visible.
  • Driver Darryl Anderson, more than twice the legal alcohol limit, pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving and was jailed for 17 years and three months in July 2024.
  • PC Dan Cuthbertson carried out the search despite being related to victim Karlene Warner, and the pair received the Rising Star accolade at the Kennel Club in London on September 24, 2025.
