Rescue Operations End as 76 Army Personnel Airlifted From Landslide-Hit North Sikkim

Overview

  • Seventy-six army personnel were airlifted from the Chaten area on June 7, marking the completion of coordinated evacuation efforts.
  • By June 6, four helicopter sorties had evacuated 80 people—63 tourists and 17 local residents—from Chaten to Pakyong Greenfield Airport.
  • A multi-agency team including the Indian Army, Indian Air Force, NDRF, SDRF, BRO and local authorities conducted air and ground operations since the June 1 landslides.
  • The initial landslide on June 1 struck a military camp at Chaten, killing three personnel, injuring four and leaving six soldiers unaccounted for.
  • On June 7, IAF helicopters also delivered 1,300 kg of relief material, and efforts are underway to restore the Chungthang–Sankalang road and other vital infrastructure.
