Rescue Operations Continue After 6.1-Magnitude Quake Rocks Western Turkey

AFAD mobilized provincial teams under the national response plan to conduct structural surveys in the quake zone hours after the Sindirgi tremor.

Overview

  • The magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck Sindirgi district of Balıkesir province at 7:53 pm local time on August 10, occurring at a shallow depth of about 10–11 km.
  • Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya confirmed one fatality and 29 injuries in the affected area, with most of the wounded reported in stable condition.
  • Officials say roughly ten buildings collapsed near the epicenter, including a three-story home from which four residents were rescued while efforts continue to reach two still unaccounted for.
  • Under the Turkey Disaster Response Plan (TAMP), AFAD dispatched personnel and vehicles from ten provincial directorates to support search, rescue and structural assessments.
  • Multiple aftershocks, the strongest registering at magnitude 4.6, have followed the main tremor, extending response efforts across Balıkesir and neighboring provinces.
