Rescue Group Adopts Cereza and Cerecito One Month After Iztapalapa Tanker Blast

The shelter will keep the mother and pup permanently in its care during their continued medical recovery.

Overview

  • Huellitas Amor Sin Fronteras announced it has formally adopted Cereza and her surviving puppy, Cerecito, and will keep them as part of the refuge’s family.
  • Both dogs remain under veterinary care, with ongoing treatment to rebuild Cereza’s burned tissue, while one-month-old Cerecito is progressing well.
  • Cereza underwent an emergency cesarean after the Sept. 10 explosion and delivered five puppies, four of which died, leaving Cerecito as the sole survivor.
  • The Sept. 10 rollover and explosion on the Puente de La Concordia in Iztapalapa killed 31 people; official records indicate the tanker carried about 49,500 liters of LPG.
  • Investigators have reserved the case file for three years, identify excess speed as the principal hypothesis, and attribute responsibility to the driver, as Mexico City proposes new limits on hazardous-material transport including a 30 km/h cap, time restrictions, radars and tougher sanctions.
