Republican Congressman Faces Backlash After Using Term 'Colored People' During House Floor Speech

Rep. Eli Crane (R-AZ) referred to minorities in the military as "colored people" during a debate on his proposed amendment to the NDAA.
Rep. Joyce Beatty (D-OH) immediately objected to the language and had it removed from the record.
Crane later said he misspoke and had meant to say "people of color," but the damage was done.
The Congressional Black Caucus and other Democrats condemned Crane's remark as racist and inappropriate.
Despite criticism, Crane's amendment was narrowly adopted as part of the House version of the defense spending bill.
