Republican Candidates Pledge to Pardon Trump if Elected

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, both Republican presidential candidates, have pledged to pardon former President Donald Trump if he is convicted of any of the 91 felony charges he currently faces.
Trump's charges stem from multiple cases, including his role in the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol and allegations of obstruction of justice, which can result in up to 20 years of imprisonment.
DeSantis and Haley argue that pardoning Trump would be in the country's best interest, citing the need to move on and avoid further division.
Despite the charges against him, Trump has retained a wide lead in polls ahead of the 2024 primary, with a nearly 50-point lead over his two closest rivals, DeSantis and Haley.
Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, another Republican candidate, has criticized these pardon pledges, stating that they represent a threat to democracy and a double standard of justice.
