Republic Day Holiday: What Opens and Closes in Brazil on Nov. 15

Authorities urge use of digital banking as in-person services pause for the holiday.

Overview

  • Bank branches and Correios counters will be closed on Saturday, with Febraban advising customers to use apps, websites and PIX; in-person service and deliveries resume on Monday, Nov. 17.
  • Shopping centers, supermarkets and many retailers will open on special schedules, with food courts and cinemas operating normally in several cities, including Fortaleza.
  • Transit adjusts to holiday operations: Metrofor runs reduced hours with afternoon shutdowns and no VLT service in Sobral and Cariri, Fortaleza’s buses follow a Sunday program with extra vehicles, and Piracicaba and Limeira adopt holiday timetables.
  • São Luís retailers are authorized to open under the 2025/2026 agreement requiring 100% overtime pay, a R$53 gratuity, compensatory time off and prior employer notification to the union.
  • Local variations apply: Teresina’s downtown stores work a continuous six-hour shift, Caruaru’s neighborhood markets and the Parque 18 de Maio fair operate normally, Limeira’s street commerce stays closed, and Piracicaba’s mall opens with regular holiday hours.
