Reports: Rwanda to Host Formula 1 Grand Prix, Targeting 2030

If confirmed, the move would return F1 to Africa for the first time since 1993 and trigger major infrastructure and regulatory work for a new circuit near Kigali.

Overview

  • Multiple paddock outlets reported Tuesday that an agreement has been reached for Rwanda to host a new Grand Prix aimed at joining the Formula 1 calendar in 2030.
  • Plans described in the reports call for a permanent, state‑of‑the‑art circuit roughly 40 kilometres from Kigali near Bugesera International Airport, with designs attributed to WurzDesign.
  • Rwandan President Paul Kagame has driven the push, having launched the bid in 2024, hosted FIA events in Kigali and kept direct contact with FIA and F1 leadership through 2025.
  • The reports stress that formal confirmations, financing, land and environmental approvals, promoter agreements and FIA/F1 homologation have not been publicly completed.
  • If the plan proceeds it would undercut competing South African proposals such as Kyalami upgrades and the Blue Mountain Racing Cape Town project and could shift regional tourism and investment toward Rwanda.
