Report Finds 32 Missed Chances to Act on Cambridge Children’s Surgeon

CUH responded by accepting the findings, apologising, then publishing an action plan to strengthen oversight.

Overview

  • Independent investigators from Verita concluded that between 2012 and 2024 the trust missed 32 opportunities to address concerns about paediatric orthopaedic surgeon Kuldeep Stohr, creating prolonged risk to patients.
  • A 2016 external review highlighting shortcomings in Stohr’s technique and judgment was misunderstood and diluted, resulting in no restrictions or enhanced supervision at the time.
  • Cambridge University Hospitals issued an apology, accepted the report in full, and set out a corrective action plan, with a separate clinical review continuing.
  • The trust is reviewing the cases of almost 800 patients linked to Stohr’s care, while Verita cited broader systemic failings including weak supervision, poor communication and isolated practice.
  • Stohr has not practised since March 2024 and was formally excluded in February 2025, with the GMC imposing close-supervision restrictions as families and lawyers press for a statutory public inquiry.
