Replica 17th-Century Spanish Galleon Opens to Crowds in Whitehaven

Local authorities have arranged immersive historical tours throughout the ship’s week-long stay in Whitehaven.

Overview

  • After arriving on July 8, the Galeón Andalucía opened for public visits on July 9 and will remain docked until July 13.
  • Hundreds of people gathered for its first day at the harbour, with Whitehaven Town Crier Marc Goodwin delivering a ceremonial welcome.
  • Built by the Nao Victoria Foundation in Punta Umbría between 2009 and 2010, the 55-metre replica features six decks of iroko and pine and nearly 1,000 m² of sails.
  • Deputy lieutenant Gerard Richardson coordinated the visit in partnership with Sellafield, Amentum, Whitehaven Town Council, Harbour Commissioners and Marina Projects Whitehaven.
  • After Whitehaven, the ship will continue its European tour in France, Germany and the Netherlands before crossing the Atlantic for an American leg.
