Overview

• Multiple motorists stopped on I-35 near Osceola, Iowa, and improvised tourniquets from socks, seatbelts and a windshield wiper to control the boy’s severe bleeding.
• Van Orden, a former Navy SEAL, used a knife to cut seatbelts and worked alongside a bystander who identified as a medic as first responders arrived about 10–15 minutes later.
• The Iowa State Patrol said the minivan collided with a semi merging from the shoulder and reported no fatalities in the crash.
• Both the child and the minivan’s driver were airlifted for treatment, and Van Orden later visited the boy in a Des Moines hospital as his office released a photo.
