Renowned Indian poet Munawwar Rana, known for his significant contributions to Urdu literature, passed away at the age of 71 after a prolonged battle with throat cancer.
Rana was admitted to the Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences in Lucknow, where he breathed his last.
Born in Uttar Pradesh's Raebareli in November 1952, Rana was a prominent figure in Mushaira circles in India and abroad.
His groundbreaking work 'Maa' is considered a milestone in Urdu literature. Other notable works include 'Muhajirnama', 'Ghar Akela Ho Gaya', 'Peepal Chhaon', and 'Shahdaba'.
Rana was honored with the Sahitya Akademi Award in 2014 for his book 'Shahdaba', which he returned in 2015 as part of a writers' protest.
